Your pool sessions feel fine. But during open water swims, your shoulder begins to pinch, particularly on the side you breathe toward and often during the reach phase of your stroke.
The difference may seem surprising, but open water swimming introduces demands that are not always present in the controlled environment of a pool.
Sighting, currents, waves, breathing habits, fatigue and longer uninterrupted swimming can all influence how your shoulder manages repeated overhead movement.
Why Is Open Water Swimming Different From Pool Swimming?
Pool swimming provides a relatively predictable environment. You have lane markings for orientation, regular wall turns and generally consistent water conditions.
Open water changes that.
You may need to lift or rotate your head more frequently to sight your direction. Waves and currents can alter your stroke, while fatigue may gradually change your body position and technique.
If you predominantly breathe toward one side, these demands may also create differences between how each side of your body moves. However, breathing to one side does not automatically cause shoulder pain or injury.
Why Might the Shoulder Pinch During the Reach?
Swimming requires coordinated movement between the shoulder joint, shoulder blade and upper back.
When the arm repeatedly reaches overhead, the rotator cuff and other tissues around the shoulder need to manage substantial repetitive load.
If mobility, strength or shoulder-blade control becomes less effective as fatigue builds, the reach may begin to feel uncomfortable.
Importantly, the sensation commonly described as “impingement” does not necessarily mean that tissue is literally being trapped or that the joint has been permanently damaged. Shoulder pain can have several contributing factors and should be assessed individually when it persists.
Why Does It Sometimes Affect the Breathing Side?
Your breathing and sighting strategy can influence head, trunk and shoulder movement throughout the stroke.
If symptoms consistently appear on one particular side during open water swimming but not during pool sessions, comparing how you move in those two environments may provide useful information.
Training volume also matters. Long uninterrupted open water sessions can expose the shoulder to repeated loading without the brief pauses created by pool turns.
Why Technique May Be Only Part of the Picture
Stroke coaching can be valuable, especially when sighting or breathing mechanics are contributing to inefficient movement.
But recurring shoulder symptoms may also involve strength, mobility, training load, recovery or previous injury.
