The pain only shows up on one side. It is there at the start of a run and gone by the second kilometre, or it appears after twenty minutes of walking and eases once you sit down.
Nothing has been diagnosed. Nothing shows on a scan, if you have even had one. You have decided it is probably just tightness, so you stretch it, and for a few days, that seems to help.
That one-sided, comes-and-goes pattern is not always random tightness. It can be a sign that one side of the hip is carrying more load than the other during walking or running.
The hip works like a rope and pulley system, with several muscles sharing the load around one joint. When you walk or run, the muscles around the outside of the hip help stabilise the pelvis every time that leg accepts weight.
If one part of that system is weaker, slower to activate or simply contributing less than it should, another muscle may work harder to keep the pelvis controlled. That overworked muscle is often the one you feel as tight.
Why the Pain Picks One Side and Not the Other
Nobody walks or runs with both hips doing perfectly identical work. Small asymmetries are common.
Problems can begin when one side has been carrying more than its share for long enough that the tissues involved start reaching their tolerance.
The discomfort often does not appear when the imbalance first develops. It may only become noticeable after repeated loading, longer walks, running or other activities that demand more from the hip.
This also helps explain why the pain may fade once you stop moving. Rest removes the immediate demand and gives the overworked tissues time to settle.
The underlying movement pattern, however, may still be present when you begin loading the hip again.
Why Stretching the Tight Side Rarely Holds
Stretching can make an overworked muscle feel looser for a while, which is why it often seems helpful in the short term.
But if another part of the hip is not contributing effectively, stretching the tight area does not automatically restore the missing support.
The next walk or run can place the same demand back onto the same tissues, and the familiar tightness or discomfort returns.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons explains that hip pain can involve muscles, tendons and other soft tissues around the joint, which is why identifying the specific source of symptoms matters before deciding how to treat them.
What the Pain Is Actually Asking For
A hip that becomes uncomfortable only under load, only on one side or only after a certain distance gives useful information.
Which muscles activate when that leg accepts weight? Does the pelvis remain level from one side to the other? Has the compensation started affecting the lower back or knee?
Those findings can change what correction is needed.

Pain that appears only under a particular load is worth paying attention to, even when it settles with rest.
The earlier you understand which part of the movement system is working too hard, the easier it may be to prevent the knee, lower back or opposite hip from beginning to compensate as well.
If one side of your stride keeps becoming tight, sore or unstable, the answer may not be more stretching. It may be finding which part of the system is no longer sharing the load.
