You have followed the program exactly as written, adding weight to the bar each week as part of progressive overload.
Then, several weeks in, something begins to change. Your knee starts drifting inward during squats, your lower back rounds during heavier deadlifts, or a position that felt controlled at lighter loads becomes increasingly difficult to maintain.
Progressive overload is an important part of building strength. But increasing load works best when your movement skill, strength and physical capacity are progressing alongside it.
Why Heavier Loads Can Expose Movement Problems
A movement may look controlled at a lighter weight because the physical demand is relatively low.
As load increases, maintaining the same position requires greater strength, coordination and control. Fatigue can also make movement strategies change as a set progresses.
This means heavier weight may reveal limitations that were less obvious at lighter loads. However, form changes under load do not automatically mean there is one hidden mobility restriction or that injury is inevitable.
Training history, fatigue, technique, strength, load progression and individual anatomy can all influence how a lift looks and feels.
What Does Good Form Actually Depend On?
Good lifting technique is not simply about remembering cues such as “chest up” or “knees out.”
A squat requires coordinated movement through the ankles, knees, hips and trunk. A deadlift requires the hips and trunk to work together while managing progressively heavier resistance.
The amount of mobility required also varies depending on the exercise, stance, individual anatomy and technique being used.
If your body does not currently have the strength, control or comfortable range required for a particular version of a lift, repeatedly forcing the same position under increasing weight may not be the best solution.
Why Coaching Cues May Not Be Enough
A useful coaching cue can immediately improve technique for some lifters. But if the same breakdown repeatedly returns as the weight increases, it may be worth understanding why.
For example, the issue could involve strength at a particular point in the lift, fatigue, mobility, coordination or simply progressing the load faster than your current capacity allows.
Rather than assuming every technical problem has the same cause, assessment can help identify which factor is most relevant to you.
Progress the Movement and the Load Together
Progressive overload does not mean that weight must increase every week regardless of movement quality.
Sometimes progression means improving control, adding repetitions, increasing range of motion or becoming more consistent at the current load before moving to something heavier.
If technique begins changing substantially as the weight rises, temporarily adjusting the load can create an opportunity to work on the movement and build the capacity required for the next progression.

Heavier lifting is not inherently dangerous, and movement does not need to look perfectly identical on every repetition.
