You were told six weeks. You rested, you did the exercises handed to you, and at six weeks, you laced up and went back to running exactly as before.

Two weeks later, the same injury returned, sometimes worse than the first time. The calendar said you were ready. Your body clearly disagreed.

A fixed timeline can provide a useful guide, but it cannot tell the whole story. Different tissues recover at different rates, and the body may also change the way it moves while protecting an injured area.

The body works as a connected system. Favouring one leg can influence how the hip contributes. Guarding a hamstring can alter how the pelvis moves during a stride. Even when the original injury has settled, some of those protective movement patterns may remain.

Why Six Weeks Does Not Always Mean Ready

A recovery timeframe may estimate how long a particular tissue needs to heal, but tissue healing and readiness to run are not necessarily the same thing.

The important question is not only whether enough weeks have passed. It is whether the injured area can tolerate the forces involved in running and whether the rest of the body has returned to moving effectively around it.

The NHS provides guidance around running and exercise, while an individual return after injury may require a more specific assessment of symptoms, strength and function.

What Needs to Be True Before Running Resumes?

Returning to running should be guided by findings rather than relying entirely on a date.

Can the previously injured area tolerate progressive load without symptoms increasing? Is there enough strength and control for the demands of running? Have protective movement patterns developed while the injury was settling?

The stride itself also matters. A runner may unconsciously shorten one step, shift weight away from one side or ask another area of the body to absorb more load.

These are things that can be observed and tested. Counting weeks alone cannot answer them.

Why the Whole Movement Chain Matters

An injury does not exist in isolation while recovery takes place. The rest of the body continues moving around it.

For example, reduced confidence in one leg can change how weight transfers through the hips. Limited ankle movement may influence the knee, while altered hip control can change how forces travel through the leg during running.

Some adaptations are useful during the early stages of recovery. The problem comes when a temporary protective strategy remains after the original reason for it has passed.

Why This Changes Return-to-Sport Planning

A findings-based return does not automatically mean waiting longer.

Some people may progress more quickly when strength, movement and load tolerance are developing well. Others may need additional time or a more gradual progression before returning to their previous running volume or intensity.

The aim is to progress according to what the body can currently demonstrate rather than assuming that everyone reaches the same milestone during the same week.

A return-to-running plan can then increase demand progressively, allowing the body to demonstrate that it can tolerate each stage before the next one is added.

Return to Running, Not Back to the Injury

If a previous return to running did not hold, it does not necessarily mean you needed an arbitrary number of extra weeks.

The more useful question is whether the original tissue and the movement system around it were genuinely prepared for the load you returned to.

Before returning to your previous pace, distance or training frequency, find out what your body can actually tolerate now.
